Veraison in the Vineyard

Wine makes every meal an occasion,
every table more elegant,
every day more civilized.”
- Andre Simon

August is upon us! The grapes are steadily getting to full maturation and we’re looking forward to harvesting the 2014 vintage.

Like the beautiful quote above suggests, opening a bottle of wine makes even the most mundane evening something special. We hope that with every bottle of B.R. Cohn you open, it brightens up your day!

We suggest you try out this idea with one of our top sellers right now, Cabernet Franc! This is a fun wine to break out for friends and family as it is slightly lesser-known and very pleasing on the palate. Because of this it’s extremely versatile and can be paired with a multitude of cuisines. Our Cabernet Franc is aged in new oak which gives it hints of cedar, smokiness and vanilla.

The Science Behind Veraison

Right now the grapes are going through veraison, the process of turning color. It’s a beautiful time in the vineyards as we see this phenomenon happening before our eyes! But what’s actually going on?

According to wine.com, during veraison “…the sugar content increases and acid decreases, making the berries softer and plumper…” Color wise, red grape varietals start to reveal their pigmentation and green grapes fill out and exhibit more translucence. Much if not all of this is dependent on the grape bunches placement on the vine and where the sun hits, so the process of veraison varies widely in the same vineyard, row and sometimes even the same vine. Some bunches will turn color well before others near them purely because of where they are located.

Summer Music Series

Our first annual Summer Music Series is in full swing; we’ve had two successful concerts already and three to go! We have more eclectic bands coming up including vintage rock sounds from Crazy Famous on August 16th, Bluegrass from The Creak on September 6th, and Gypsy swing from Beso Negro on October 18th. Tickets are available for all these concerts on our website. Look forward to seeing you there!

Picnic Wines

If you plan on attending any of our Summer Music Series shows, be sure to pick up one of these great picnic wines in the tasting room before settling into your spot in the Olive Grove for some fun music and good food!

Rose: Our rose has a bright, vibrant pink color illustrating visually how much it sets itself apart from the crowd. Dry but bursting with flavor nonetheless this is a perfect wine for smoked salmon, bread and cheese, or delicious picnic sandwiches.

Potter Valley Riesling: Our Riesling has a fantastic and expressive nose with a nicely balanced acidity on the palate. It’s a great cheese wine, and would be perfect for a charcuterie plate with salami, olives and dried fruit.

Sauvignon Blanc, Grieve Family Vineyard: Any picnic would not be complete without Sauvignon Blanc. Our Sauvignon Blanc is well rounded, with a nicely balanced acidity and just a hint of oaky-ness on the finish.

Summertime is time for fresh salads and salads means vinaigrette! Here are some great recipes to try:

Simple Red Wine Vinaigrette: Our Cabernet Vinegar would really make this dressing pop!

Is there such a thing as too much lemon? We think a dash of some Meyer Lemon Olive Oil would take this already delicious Meyer Lemon and Honey Vinaigrette to the next level!

White Balsamic has such a unique flavor, it really doesn’t need much added to it to create an interesting and delicious vinaigrette!
